Case Study: Exterior Restoration of an 1800s Stone Cottage

Project Overview

This exterior restoration project focused on an 1800s-built cottage with traditional stonework, positioned with stunning views over St Austell Bay. Given the nature of heritage stone buildings, only mineral-based paints were suitable, and Keim was chosen as the best option for breathability and durability.

The Transformation

The process began with a diluted hypochlorite clean to remove any contaminants from the stone surface. This was followed by an application of Keim Fixative primer coating, ensuring proper adhesion and a solid base for the finishing layers. The final step involved two top coats of Keim Soldalit ME, all hand-brushed for maximum coverage and an authentic finish.

During the project, we faced a slight under-supply of Keim Soldalit, but after consulting with Keim, we adjusted by diluting any remaining fixative to extend the product and maintain consistency. Additionally, the UPVC soil pipes were coated in Zinsser All Coat Satin White, seamlessly blending them into the restored exterior.

The Result

The cottage now boasts a breathable, long-lasting, and beautifully finished exterior, perfectly suited to its heritage construction. Despite the intensive hand-brushed application, the effort was well worth it, delivering a flawless result. Most importantly, the client was thrilled with the transformation and the quality of the finish.
